Every organisation works to soar. To work towards this endeavour they hire the best of talent and use the best of technology. However, companies still struggle in upkeeping the work environment. The same happens because the more powerful its people become, the harder it becomes to keep the culture of the company great and employees happy.
Also, different people have different behaviours and different approaches to work and dealing with situations in between. While managing such different people may seem to be tricky, the trickiest part of the same is to manage the ones who are rude, especially when they belong to a senior managerial position.
A lot would have got simplified only if people were not rude at the workplace, but is it that easy? Clearly, not. Let us see why the same happens.
What is incivility?
Incivility is basically being rude or not speaking or acting in an appropriate manner. When a person raises his voice, tries to belittle the other person in the organisation, i.e when he is being uncivil.
How it impacts performance?
Performance is directly proportional to the treatment that each employee and the employees around him are given. When an employee is not treated well, incivility doesn’t just impact him but the employees around him as well. They naturally start feeling demotivated and as a result, of the same the productivity drops.
But the sad part is that Incivility is something that cannot really be controlled using HR and payroll management software.
It is more like a communicable disease and it spreads outside the office as well. Even if we are not being rude to anyone around, the time we end up not taking a stand against the same, we allow it to spread and affect your emotional state.
In an assessment done by Porath, it was found that people are constantly being uncivil because of the stress. In the case of leaders, they tend to be the way they are because that makes them feel more powerful and leader-like. This thought is ingrained in them because we are conditioned to think that nice people are always the one taken advantage of.
What should the leaders do?
Research shows that employees want respect more than anything from their leaders. Even more than recognition, training and regular feedback, respect from leaders is required and the same can come from them if they act civil. So, try and analyse your behaviour as a leader and a human so that you can improve. Remember, a true leader is only the one that believes in growing his team along with him.
