Net pay is the total pay that you take home or the amount of money that you earn as an employee after all the payroll deductions have been made (subtracted) from your gross pay. 

Gross Pay vs Net Pay: What is the Difference Between Gross Pay and Net Pay 

Gross pay is the total pay that you pay your employees before any of the tax or other payroll deductions have been made from their salary. It includes everything including hourly or monthly pay, bonuses, overtime pay, or any other form of income added to their salary. 

On the other hand, net pay is the one that your employees receive after all the deductions have been made from their gross income. It’s also called take-home pay. 

Understanding these terms can help you negotiate the deals with your candidates in the best way possible.  

For instance, when you’re discussing salary with your candidate, what you discuss with them is the gross pay like we’ll pay you 70K INR per month or 1000 INR per hour.  

What Can Reduce Net Pay 

Your employees’ net pay can be reduced on usage of exemptions like HRA, LTA, and other reimbursements. Besides that, there are other taxes that can reduce your employees’ net pay. Here’s a list of all of them:

In addition to that, the employees can also plan their taxes and savings when they know what their net salary is going to be like. Along with that, they can save money on the benefits that they receive—for instance, if there are certain benefits included in their gross salary, by opting for a lower net salary, they can save more money.

The formula or net pay is as follows:

How to Calculate Net to Gross Pay 

Calculating net to gross pay is simple. Here are the steps you’ll have to follow: 

  1. Figure out your total gross pay, meaning the total annual salary divided by the number of months which are going to be your pay period. For instance, if you get paid for 12 months of the year, then your gross pay will be your annual salary divided by 12. 
  1. Calculate the number of pre-tax deductions; how many taxes and what total amount will be deducted from your salary. For instance, 3000 INR for health insurance or 5000 INR for retirement plan. 
  1. Calculate all the pre-tax and post-tax deductions. 
  1. Finally, find your net pay by determining the total amount of taxes going to be deducted from your gross salary per month and then subtracting it by your gross salary. 

How to Calculate Basic Pay from Net Salary 

To calculate your basic pay from your net salary, subtract the total allowance from your gross pay.  

Allowance are the benefits that you get in your total gross salary—for instance, housing allowance, location allowance, etc. 

Mostly, your basic pay is 40-50% of your gross income.
