When an employer before hiring a job applicant ensures his educational qualification, work experience and other credentials, that are mentioned on their resume by various means such as, taking feedback from their previous company’s managers or by cross questioning the applicant is known as background check or background screening.

It’s a pre-employment practice that helps in recruiting eligible, trustworthy and capable workforce and helps in avoiding unwarranted chaos like inefficiency, poor quality of work and wasted man-hours over a non-competent employee.

To avoid such mishaps, the company may ask for a signed proof as part of the employee agreement and if found guilty the person can be sacked with a penalty amount. But this is a rare practice.
