What is Leave Balance
Leave balance is basically the number of leaves that you have remaining in your system and you can use them as per your requirement.
How to Ask Leave Balance
One of the most traditional ways to ask for your leave balance is to simply submit a request to your HR department to know your leave balance.
But it can result in hassle for no reason, plus, you’ll have to wait a long time because the HR can process your request before finishing the other work or resolving the other queries. The best way is to have a proper HR system in your company that enables you to check your leave balance yourself without really having to bother your HR in person to know a small detail like this.
Because mostly, if you go to HR to know your leave balance, they will give you at least a time of two days before you can know your leave balance. On the other hand, the software systems enable employees to know their leave balance right then and there.
What are the Key Aspects of Leave Balance
The leave balance makes sure that the employees have the knowledge of how many times they can take time off and whether it’s available for them. They can use it to rest, rejuvenate, or attend to any personal matter and maintain their health.
How Does Leave Balance Work?
The simple process is that you have a leave balance, let’s say you have 20 leaves for the year left in your leave balance. Now depending on your need, you simply take 2-5 days of leave, again, let’s say to go on a trip.
That way, after you apply for these leaves in that month before your payroll, your leave balance will deduct to 15 days (about 2 weeks) left. Now, at this point, you only have 15 more days left in your leave balance that you can use later to take days off work.
It can be for any reason—for instance, you got sick, and you need a leave, or you must attend some personal event at home or anywhere, you can use this leave balance then as well.
What Is the Process for Requesting and Approving Leave?
The basic process of requesting and approving leaves is simple. You go to your manager and ask them for a leave. Generally, they approve it right from their side, but, if necessary, they may also ask the other heads involved whether this leave should be approved or not. And then depending on their answers, they approve your leave.
However, it’s important to note that this process can be different for different companies. For instance, in some companies, you’ll have to provide a written application, while in other companies, you can apply for a leave through a software system that they approve from the system as well.
In some cases, you don’t need to submit a formal request, just mention it verbally and you get the leave.
This process also depends on the type of leave you’re taking, for instance sick leave is okay even if you mention it right before you need it and you may get approval. For casual leaves, you may have to apply for at least a day before; on the other hand, for earned leaves, you may have to request your manager in advance.
Leave Balance Calculator
There are many leave balance calculators that you can use to calculate your leave. The simple formula for leave balance calculation is this: [(Basic Salary + Dearness Allowance) / 30] x No of EL
Is It Possible to Carry Forward Unused Leave to Next Year?
Yes, most of the company moves your leaves to next year. However, again, it can also be different for different companies—for instance, some companies may only carry forward the earned leaves and let the casual or sick leaves go.
On the other hand, other companies may carry forward all your leaves. It also includes encashing the leaves later on if you haven’t taken them.
What Is the Company’s Policy on Remote Work and Leave Balance?
It depends on company to company. Each one of them can have their own policy regarding remote work and leave balance.
Some organizations may offer a few days of work from home, for employees working in hybrid mode, and a few leaves as mandatory.
