When choosing HR software, evaluate it on five practical dimensions rather than feature counts: statutory compliance coverage for your states, predictable pricing that scales with headcount, realistic implementation timeline, data ownership and exit terms, and the quality and speed of support. These determine the real experience of using the tool far more than the demo does.
Beyond those, match the software to your context: the modules you actually need, a strong employee self-service mobile app, integration with your existing accounting or ERP tools, and the ability to handle your workforce mix and multiple locations. Shortlist two or three options, run your own payroll and leave scenarios through each, and check references from companies of similar size and industry. The best choice is the one that fits your situation and grows with you without forcing a later migration.
