There is no single “best” HRMS for every SMB — the right choice depends on headcount, budget, and how much statutory compliance you need built in. For Indian small and mid-sized businesses, the strongest options share a common profile: cloud-based, per-employee-per-month pricing, native handling of EPF, ESI, TDS and Professional Tax across states, and a fast (under-3-week) implementation that doesn’t require a consultant.
Evaluate on five practical fronts rather than feature counts: (1) does it run statutory payroll for your states automatically; (2) is there a usable employee self-service mobile app; (3) does pricing stay predictable as you cross 50 and 100 employees; (4) how long is realistic go-live; and (5) what are the data export and exit terms. Shortlist two or three tools, run a scripted demo against your own payroll scenario, and check references from companies your size.
