How do I measure employee engagement without expensive survey tools?

Employee engagement can be measured without costly platforms by using short, regular pulse surveys, structured one-on-ones, and observable behavioural signals. A brief recurring survey of a few well-chosen questions — run through free or low-cost form tools — captures sentiment trends over time more usefully than an occasional long survey.

Complement self-reported data with signals you already have: attendance and absence patterns, attrition and its reasons, participation in optional activities, and themes raised in one-on-ones and exit interviews. Track a simple, consistent measure such as a willingness-to-recommend score, watch the trend, and — most importantly — act visibly on what you learn. Acting on feedback does more for engagement than the sophistication of the measurement tool.
