A 30-60-90 day onboarding plan structures a new hire’s first three months around progressive goals: learning in the first 30 days, contributing in the next 30, and operating independently by day 90. Each phase should have clear expectations, checkpoints, and the support needed to meet them.
A typical structure: the first 30 days focus on orientation — systems access, role clarity, team introductions, training, and understanding processes and culture. Days 31–60 shift to applied work with guidance, owning smaller tasks and building relationships. Days 61–90 move to independent contribution, measurable deliverables, and a review against the goals set at the start. Regular manager check-ins throughout, and a structured 90-day review, are what make the plan effective rather than a checklist.
